High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and Mercury

I just read the following article on the Washington Post web site:
“Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury”

They’ve found mercury in some HFCS (apparently, it depends on how they make it). They did say that some of the offenders were sweetened dairy products. If they mean sweetened yogurts and the like, could these be the culprits of some autistic/Asperger’s symptoms?
We started a gluten-free casein-free GFCF diet recently to try to alleviate some Asperger’s type symptoms in DS and eczema in DS and DD1, but I’m wondering if some of the benefits toward autistic symptoms that people have noticed haven’t been due to taking HFCS out of their diets “accidentally.” Many of the specialty GFCF foods are sweetened with sugar, molasses, or honey instead of HFCS. Alternately, if you just eat foods in their natural form to avoid gluten and casein (meats, fruits, vegetables, beans), you’re not going to get anywhere near HFCS. Maybe this is also why not everyone sees improvements in GFCF diets. There are those of us who still let our kids have treats (like gummi bears) while on the GFCF diet. I am guessing that I’d be wise to read my labels even more carefully and eliminate this ingredient, too, for now.
DH has always told me that he believes that the rise in environmental toxins might be responsible for the rise in autism and autism spectrum disorders. Could it be in the very food we eat? The ones (like yogurt) that we have been encouraged to feed our kids?
I don’t want to be a conspiracy theorist or anything, but I do think this is worth thinking about.
